Masturbation, an unspoken act amongst females
In SA Sex Survey 2013Masturbation, an unspoken act amongst females
According to the SA Sex Survey 2013, 23% of students have never masturbated, with that number being far more inclusive of female responses than males.
Majority of boys claim to have begun masturbating between the ages of 14-18, whilst for those girls that admit to masturbating, majority began at 19-24.
The topic of masturbation was a fascinating one. For guys, it was an easy thing to discuss with stories of “Soggy Maries” being shared whilst for girls the topic raised much embarrassment, with many wishing to disappear within the focus group discussions. Masturbation amongst many girls was deemed something that guys did, not girls.
Masturbation, particularly amongst females was a conversation that was never discussed or raised in homes or even amongst friends. So in essence, as a child and maturing female, one would get the “period and sex talk” but at no point was the topic of masturbation ever raised.
