Sex, we appear to be surrounded by it, day to day, hour to hour and minute to minute. It’s inescapable. It infiltrates our music, our movies, our magazines, our billboards, our homes and our universities. Sex, one of the most effective marketing tools used by many in today’s day and age. It’s true, sex does sell! In a recent Sex Survey, conducted amongst South Africa’s youth during the month of October 2013, we see the active effects surrounding student’s belief system as well as relationship with sex.
Students are claiming to be far more liberal about sex, with every four out of five students admitting to currently being sexually active. In case some of you are unsure of what students define as sex, majority define sex as vaginal penetration with a penis.
Did that last sentence and two words in particular make some of you a little uncomfortable? Vagina and penis, two parts of the human anatomy which many students displayed some degree of discomfort referring to. In conjunction with this degree of embarrassment, many girls wanted to crawl under the tables and dig a small hole for themselves when the act of masturbation was discussed. Ironically, when it came to the topic and discussion around sex, this was seen as easier, more comfortable and common to discuss. In many cases sex enabled bragging rights, particularly amongst the boys. I question if our youth has become so desensitized to sex as a result of its use in the media.
In the high level presentation, Student Village covered a variety of topics associated with students association and beliefs surrounding sex and related sexual activities. All these elements are dealt with in greater detail within the SA Sex Survey 2013.
A total of 3 040 students across various South African tertiary institutions completed the survey.
The sample was national and fully representative of SA’s population. Interestingly more males than females took part in the survey. Despite this there was a diverse racial profile with students who were able to partake in the study being above 17 years of age.
Check out the links below for a snap shot around the key themes tackled within the high level presentation.
1. Students claim to be liberal when it comes to sex, but are they really?
