It may sound a bit extreme but according to the SA Student Media Consumption Survey 2014, students would so virtually anything to receive likes.

Students reference the thrill and ability of a like to heighten ones endorphins and oxidize the body…it provided a rush so to speak. For many the obtainment of a like was like receiving a hit from a cheap drug, it sent them on a short high and they would soon be hungry for another fix. Therefore, the objective for many is to maximize reach so as to maximize the amount of likes obtained.

Obtaining likes elevated ones degree of acceptance, both from oneself as well as from others. Increased confidence and a false sense of happiness and joy.
